Associate Professor of Finance, NUS Business School
Certified Public Accountant
PhD, University of Washington

Professor Tan teaches business finance, personal finance, corporate finance, and financial markets. She received the Faculty Outstanding Educator Award in 2003, and Recognition for Excellence as Outstanding Educator in 2004. She was also listed as an excellent teacher in the "The NUS Undergraduate Student Feedback 2002/2003".

She is currently serving on the Board of Management of the NUS Academic Staff Provident Fund. In 2002, she held the post of Vice Dean of Finance and Administration in the School. She also does consulting and conducts in-house training programs for various multinational organizations.

Her research interests include privatization and policy risk, mergers and acquisition and seasoned equity offerings. Professor Tan's research articles have been published in numerous international academic and professional journals. She frequently serves as reviewer for international journals and was associate editor of the Asian Case Research Journal from 1997 to 2003.

Chng Chee Kiong

PhD, University of Queensland

Professor Chng is the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Studies at NUS Business School and was formerly the Deputy Head of its Department of Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS) and a Fellow of CPA Australia.

Professor Chng has taught courses in corporate accounting and reporting, financial accounting and finance statement analysis in both undergraduate and graduate programs at NUS. He has received several teaching excellence awards at NUS. His research interests lie in financial statement accounting and disclosure practices.

Marleen Dieleman

Dr Dieleman is Senior Researcher and Associate Director of the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organizations at NUS Business School. She holds a PhD from Leiden University and a master’s degree in business administration from Rotterdam School of Management, both in The Netherlands.

At Leiden University she was Assistant Dean of Leiden University School of Management and Director of the MBA program. Dr Dieleman’s research interests are in Asian family businesses, in particular in Indonesia. Her publications include a book on the Salim Group, articles in academic journals, book chapters, cases and reports. Her work has been featured in international media such as the Financial Times, and in most newspapers in Indonesia and Singapore.

She has taught strategy and family business courses at different levels, including BBA, MBA and executive teaching for various large companies, and she is a frequent invited speaker on Asian family business.

Dr Wiwattanakantang is an Associate Professor at NUS Business School. Her research and teaching interests are in the area of governance of family firms – in particular, the role of the founding family and the impact of family affairs on corporate behaviour, such as succession and firm performance. She is an expert on the value of political marriages to family firms, as well as the unique adoption practices carried out by Japanese family businesses that result in superior performance. To understand how various succession practices affect business survival, she is currently extending her research to include top family firms worldwide. In addition, she is also investigating the post-IPO evolution of family firms with respect to ownership and control, focusing on the reasons that lead to the retention or sale of the business, as well as the choice between family and non-family CEOs.

Dr Wiwattanakantang's research has been published in top-tier academic journals as well as cited by media such as the Financial Times. She has been invited to present her research at many central banks and renowned universities such as the Harvard Business School, Columbia University, INSEAD, London Business School and University of Tokyo.

Professor Mahmood is a faculty of the Department of Strategy and Policy where he teaches in BBA, MBA and executive programs. He has also taught at Harvard University and worked on research projects at Wharton and INSEAD. Prior to joining NUS, Professor Mahmood worked as an analyst at Gemini Consulting in Chicago and a consultant with Levitan & Associates in Boston. Professor Mahmood's research is on managing innovation in the Asian context and he is currently working on several ongoing projects in innovation and ownership, whole networks and network stability. His work has won several research awards including the Temple/AIB Best Paper Award and Haynes Prize by the Academy of International Business.

Professor Sum is currently Area-Coordinator of the Operations and Supply Chain Management Group in the Decision Sciences Department. He was formerly Co-Academic Director of the NUS MBA program. An active consultant and executive trainer, he has serviced private and public organizations such as SIA, IBM, Shell, IKEA, Kaifa (Shenzhen), APP (Indonesia), Singapore Confederation of Industries, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, Chartered Institute of Transport (Singapore), and Singapore Technologies Logistics.

His current research interests are in the development of operations and supply chain capabilities, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), operations strategy, and global operations management. His research has appeared in leading international journals such as Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, IIE (Trans), European Journal of Operational Research, and Omega.

Before joining academia, he worked as an information systems officer in a computer organization and an engineer in an aerospace company.

Chia Ho Beng
Senior Lecturer, NUS Business School
PhD, University of British Columbia

Dr Chia teaches undergraduates, university scholars, post-graduates, executives, and unionists in leadership, coaching for change, creative problem solving, human resource management, negotiations, mediation, and conflict resolution. He was awarded the Outstanding Educator Award in 2001 and 2002 and has made the list of the top 6 percent of educators at the National University of Singapore in 2003.

Dr Chia is also an adjunct feedback coach with the Center of Creative Leadership, and serves on various mediation and dispute resolution committees in Singapore. He is part of the research group at Singapore Mediation Centre, and on the management committee of the Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2006, Dr Chia was even awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award by the NUS Business School.

His research interests include motivating and encouraging organizational citizenship behaviour, cross cultural negotiations and mediation, the human side of knowledge management, and human resource management for technology innovation teams.

Prior to his academic career, he worked in both the financial and manufacturing sectors. His work experience includes managing corporate accounts, turnaround management, managing in merger transitions, and problem loans management. Dr Chia brings to the classroom a blend of theory and practical experience.

Jay Narayanan

Dr Narayanan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management & Organization at NUS Business School. He received his PhD in Organizational Behaviour from the London Business School for his dissertation in the area of negotiations and decision-making. He also has a Masters in Human Resources from XLRI Jamshedpur and won the Citibank Leader's award for overall excellence during his time.

Dr Narayanan's research interests are in the areas of negotiations and bargaining, and creating effective groups and teams in organizations. He has taught organizational behaviour to undergraduates at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has also been involved in the development and delivery of negotiations courses for MBA and executive MBA students at the London Business School. Dr Narayanan has taught negotiations and influence to executives in a wide range of industries in China, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, Austria and the UK. He currently directs the New Manager's Program and co-directs the Negotiations & Influence in Asia program at NUS.

Prior to his academic career, Dr Narayanan worked with organizations such as Asea Brown Boveri and Mercer HR consulting. Most recently, he was one of the founding members of Merittrac, India's largest human resource assessment company. Dr Narayanan's teaching is based on the psychological research he undertakes as well as the rich experience that he brings from the corporate world.

When he is not teaching or researching, Dr Narayanan meditates, loves nature and his Brompton foldable bicycle. He also is the co-creator of TEDxNUS – an independently licensed event that runs along the format of the TED conferences.

Professor Carroll's research interests include organizational theory, strategic management, and industrial evolution. He has pioneered organizational analysis, as well as their application to strategy. Professor Carroll pioneered the study of population dynamics among organizations, examining how the demographics of firms affecting corporate change.

Professor Whang's research specializations are in information management,

Lowe Joo Yong
Lecturer, NUS Business School

Mr Lowe is a Lecturer in the Department of Management & Organization at NUS Business School. He specializes in human resource management, leadership development, career management and talent management. Besides teaching undergraduates, he also teaches various leadership and executive programs. He has developed customized executive programs for renowned international companies such as AP Moeller-Maersk, Panasonic, Incheon, International Airport, Singapore's Ministry of Education, Sampath Bank of Sri Lanka, AES Corp (a global energy company), Guangzhou City Tax Department and Mitsui Group, among others. He has also developed a series of leadership development programs for companies in the Suzhou Industrial Park under the NUS–Fudan Joint Graduate School.

Mr Lowe is trained in the Case Teaching Method by Harvard Business School, and in turn, trains others on this method. He is also trained in counselling both by the National Institute of Education and the Counselling & Care Centre of Singapore, and serves as a career counsellor for students. He is also a trained People Developer Assessor by PSB Academy.

In 2006, Mr Lowe was given the NUS Business School Outstanding Educator Award in recognition of his excellent teaching performances.

Nitin Pangarkar

Dr Pangarkar teaches strategy and international business courses in the BBA, MBA and Executive MBA programs at the National University of Singapore. He has been a key faculty in several executive development programs at NUS including the General Management Program, the Strategic Management Program and the Commonwealth Top Managers Program. Recognised by both students and fellow faculty for his excellent work, Dr Pangarkar has been the recipient of several awards for superior teaching and service.

He has been an invited speaker for several managerial conferences as well as a consultant to many companies such as Alliant Techsystems, DuPont, IBC Asia, IQPC Worldwide and Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.

His research interests lie in strategic management and international business – specifically cross-border strategic alliances, mode of entry and global strategy. Dr Pangarkar's research has been published in the form of several international journal articles, conference proceedings, cases, and book chapters.

Dr Lim is Deputy Head of the Department of Management and Organization at NUS Business School. She received her PhD in Organizational Behaviour from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also the Editor-in Chief of Applied Psychology: An International Review.

Dr Lim's expertise is in the areas of workplace health, leadership, job loss, employee misbehaviours and discipline, and the impact of technology on the workplace. Her research has been published in internationally-refereed journals, as well as cited in media such as The Straits Times, Business Times, Harvard Business Review, The Globe and Mail, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and on radio and TV channels such as CBS and ABC.

Dr Lim has received numerous commendations and recognition for her achievements in teaching. She was a recipient of Departmental, Faculty, University Outstanding Educator Awards and Dean's Commendations from 1999 to 2013. These awards, given by the university, recognize faculty members who have demonstrated high levels of excellence and commitment to teaching. As a three-time winner of the Annual Teaching Excellence Award, Dr Lim has been placed on the University's Teaching Honour Roll. More recently, Dr Lim was invited to serve on the Teaching Excellence Council at NUS Business School. He is part of the research group at Singapore Mediation Centre, and on the management committee of the Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility. In 2006, Dr Chia was even awarded the Outstanding Community Service Award by the NUS Business School.

His research interests include motivating and encouraging organizational citizenship behaviour, cross cultural negotiations and mediation, the human side of knowledge management, and human resource management for technology innovation teams.

Prior to his academic career, he worked in both the financial and manufacturing sectors. His work experience includes managing corporate accounts, turnaround management, managing in merger transitions, and problem loans management. Dr Chia brings to the classroom a blend of theory and practical experience.

Dr Narayanan's research interests are in the areas of negotiations and bargaining, and creating effective groups and teams in organizations. He has taught organizational behaviour to undergraduates at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has also been involved in the development and delivery of negotiations courses for MBA and executive MBA students at the London Business School. Dr Narayanan has taught negotiations and influence to executives in a wide range of industries in China, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Japan, Germany, Austria and the UK. He currently directs the New Manager's Program and co-directs the Negotiations & Influence in Asia program at NUS.

Prior to his academic career, Dr Narayanan worked with organizations such as Asea Brown Boveri and Mercer HR consulting. Most recently, he was one of the founding members of Merittrac, India's largest human resource assessment company. Dr Narayanan's teaching is based on the psychological research he undertakes as well as the rich experience that he brings from the corporate world.

When he is not teaching or researching, Dr Narayanan meditates, loves nature and his Brompton foldable bicycle. He also is the co-creator of TEDxNUS – an independently licensed event that runs along the format of the TED conferences.

Strategic Human Resource Management

Lowe Joo Yong
Lecturer, NUS Business School

Mr Lowe is a Lecturer in the Department of Management & Organization at NUS Business School. He specializes in human resource management, leadership development, career management and talent management. Besides teaching undergraduates, he also teaches various leadership and executive programs. He has developed customized executive programs for renowned international companies such as AP Moeller-Maersk, Panasonic, Incheon, International Airport, Singapore's Ministry of Education, Sampath Bank of Sri Lanka, AES Corp (a global energy company), Guangzhou City Tax Department and Mitsui Group, among others. He has also developed a series of leadership development programs for companies in the Suzhou Industrial Park under the NUS–Fudan Joint Graduate School.

Mr Lowe is trained in the Case Teaching Method by Harvard Business School, and in turn, trains others on this method. He is also trained in counselling both by the National Institute of Education and the Counselling & Care Centre of Singapore, and serves as a career counsellor for students. He is also a trained People Developer Assessor by PSB Academy.

In 2006, Mr Lowe was given the NUS Business School Outstanding Educator Award in recognition of his excellent teaching performances.

Nitin Pangarkar
Associate Professor of Business Policy, NUS Business School

Dr Pangarkar teaches strategy and international business courses in the BBA, MBA and Executive MBA programs at the National University of Singapore. He has been a key faculty in several executive development programs at NUS including the General Management Program, the Strategic Management Program and the Commonwealth Top Managers Program. Recognised by both students and fellow faculty for his excellent work, Dr Pangarkar has been the recipient of several awards for superior teaching and service.

He has been an invited speaker for several managerial conferences as well as a consultant to many companies such as Alliant Techsystems, DuPont, IBC Asia, IQPC Worldwide and Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce.

His research interests lie in strategic management and international business – specifically cross-border strategic alliances, mode of entry and global strategy. Dr Pangarkar's research has been published in the form of several international journal articles, conference proceedings, cases, and book chapters.

Vivien Lim
Associate Professor and Deputy Head, NUS Business School
PhD, University of Pittsburgh

Dr Lim is Deputy Head of the Department of Management and Organization at NUS Business School. She received her PhD in Organizational Behaviour from the University of Pittsburgh. She is also the Editor-in Chief of Applied Psychology: An International Review.

Dr Lim's expertise is in the areas of workplace health, leadership, job loss, employee misbehaviours and discipline, and the impact of technology on the workplace. Her research has been published in internationally-refereed journals, as well as cited in media such as The Straits Times, Business Times, Harvard Business Review, The Globe and Mail, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and on radio and TV channels such as CBS and ABC.

Dr Lim has received numerous commendations and recognition for her achievements in teaching. She was a recipient of Departmental, Faculty, University Outstanding Educator Awards and Dean's Commendations from 1999 to 2013. These awards, given by the university, recognize faculty members who have demonstrated high levels of excellence and commitment to teaching. As a three-time winner of the Annual Teaching Excellence Award, Dr Lim has been placed on the University's Teaching Honour Roll. More recently, Dr Lim was invited to serve on the Teaching Excellence Council at NUS Business School. Dr Lim was formerly Sub-Dean of the faculty and was involved in spearheading the MSc/PhD (by research) program.
